After leaving New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday afternoon, we took the subway back to our hotel, retrieved our luggage, and then took a very pricey taxi in bumper-to-bumper traffic to faraway JFK Airport. We had an uneventful flight to Manchester, UK arriving early this morning. We picked up our rental car, (after having a small spat about prepaid insurance with the Europcar agent), and drove a couple hours to York. We stopped along the way for coffee to help our brains wrap around driving on the Left.
In York, we find our nice B&B accommodations, unpack and take a walk through this old Medieval City. Getting lost in the maze of winding streets in this charming city is a pleasure. York has the most intact city walls of any city in England. We walk the northwest section of the wall that has a good view of York’s imposing Minster (Cathedral). York was founded by the Romans and was their capital of Northern Britannia. Constantine was declared Emperor here in 306 AD when his father died unexpectedly during an inspection of the York garrison.
Our cute B&B has lots of goodies in the room. Besides cookies and treats, there is a decanter of sherry for a nice nightcap.
