September 6-7, 2018

The travel bug is getting us moving again. It is winter south of the equator in South America, so that seems like a good direction. Plus it has been twelve years since our last trip touring Peru so we are overdue exploring our sister Americas continent.

After our puddle jumper to Houston, we board our over-night flight. The air time is about the same as going to Europe, just without the major time difference. Surprisingly South America is still four hours ahead of us, and an hour ahead of NYC. South America is not straight below the USA like flat maps would have you believe.

In the morning we arrive in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Brazilians speak Portuguese because in 1494, the Catholic pope arbitrarily divided the New World between Spain and Portugal. Portugal got the eastern half but didn’t even discover Brazil until 1500 when an explorer got blown off course while sailing down the coast of Africa.

At the airport, we find our tour guide and take the shuttle to our hotel on Leme Beach. Leme is the eastern end of 2.5-mile long Copacabana Beach. Today, September 7 is Brazilian Independence Day. Everybody has the day off and is at the beach with us enjoying the Spring weather. For Aimee there are lots of guys in Speedos showing off their Soccer skills, while lots of girls stroll by in their tiny Thong Bikinis.

After walking the beach and cruising back along the mosaic-tiled promenade we stop at a beach bar to taste the local brew and toast Brazil’s Independence.

In the late afternoon, we join our tour group for introductions and then head to a restaurant for dinner. The buffet choices are vast. To pile on the food, an endless series of waiters come by with huge slabs of various meat cuts. We are carnivores for the evening. Aimee and I decide we need to walk the beach back to our hotel to work off the calories.
