My body is still a little jet-lagged so Aimee does some window-shopping in York while I catch up on sleep. After lunch we set out to explore a little more walking past the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey, and across the river to the National Rail Museum. Situated on a large site next to the Rail Station, it has lots of vintage rail cars, including one of Queen Victoria’s personal cars. She oversaw the rail revolution of Britain and her empire. The site also has several locomotives that have been sawed in half to illustrate their operation. We watch a film on the construction of locomotives in 1935. It is amazing the number of people and the variety of skills needed to run this labor intensive form of transportation.

We walked along a section of York’s wall to the Cathedral. York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps. It is cavernous inside. It also has the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. We finish our tour in the choir section where we attend an Evensong. This is an Anglican ritual and mostly consists of an hour of listening to the chanting of a variety of psalms. I tell Aimee this should cover our Sunday church obligation.

We have a delicious dinner at a nearby Indian restaurant. Since India was a prized part of the Empire, this cuisine is very popular. Back in our room, I have another glass of sherry while writing this blog entry.
